About

Aspire is me.

For a long time this site said "we." It was always me... so I'm going to say that plainly now.

I'm Joel Shakespear, a Dallas designer, brand builder, and... more recently... AI product builder. For 25+ years my job has worn a dozen titles, but underneath it's always been one thing: translation. Taking what's complex, fragmented, or stuck in the wrong format... a half-formed brand, a dense manuscript, an undocumented process... and turning it into something people can understand, trust, and use.

That work has run through published design and illustration (my work was featured in the 2010 Exhibition Calendar alongside Chuck Anderson, Nik Ainley, Radim Malinic, Jonathan Wong, and Pete Harrison), the LifeSynch rebrand for Humana, Steelcase programs that scaled worldwide, editorial and portrait photography, enterprise identity systems, and now AI products that make expertise usable without their author in the room. The medium keeps changing. The move never does.

It usually starts with one question I ask every client: what's the story you're trying to tell? Everything I make... a logo, a page, a campaign, a whole brand... is just me helping you tell that story clearly enough that the right people believe it.

Aspire is how I take that on for other people. When a project needs more hands than mine, I assemble a team I trust... but the thinking, the craft, and the accountability are mine. And when a problem is bigger than design... when it needs an actual AI product or custom software... I can build that too, or point you to the right part of my world.

The Aspire|MKT mark: an upward-reaching A built from magenta and cyan legs meeting in purple.

The mark

The Aspire mark is an upward-reaching form... a spire, the "A" of Aspire, an obelisk that rises above the mundane and takes the high road. It's built from two legs of light, magenta and cyan... two energies that meet and resolve into a neutral purple where they overlap. The whole idea in one shape: distinct things coming together to become something that rises from the ordinary into the extraordinary. That's the work.

A few true things that aren't on a client list: I grew up in Austin, I've been in Dallas 20-plus years, and I'm on a bike whenever I can be.

If you've got something complex that needs to become real, that's my favorite kind of problem. Let's make it usable.
